Hero
In semiotic theory, the term hero designates the subject actant of a narrative trajectory (or quest) once it has come into possession of a certain competence, that is, of a being-able-to-do and/or knowing-how to-do. A pilot who sets off to fly around the world in a hot-air balloon must possess the necessary skill and equipment: s/he can then be termed a hero.
An actualized hero is a hero who is in possession of this competence but who has not yet passed to the stage of performance. It can be distinguished from the realized hero who is in possession of the object of the quest. In our example, the hero is actualized in the act of flying. If the balloon succeeds in going round the world, then the hero can be described as realized.
In a more conventional meaning of a word, especially in oral and classical works, the term hero is endowed with euphoric connotations and is opposed to that of villain (the dysphoric or nasty).
