It has not been possible to give details about the ever-expanding range of VOCAs. However, it is hoped that a flavor of the range of AAC systems now available has been offered. A list of suppliers and of types of equipment is given for further research purposes.

Key issues

It is anticipated that you will now:

■ have an understanding of normal language development;

■ recognize the importance of language in all aspects of the curriculum and social life of an educational environment;

■ encourage the use of effective strategies, assessments and interventions;

■ have an understanding of what Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) needs are;

■ understand what AAC systems are and how they can support a learner with speech and language needs;

■ recognize the importance of collaborative working with particular regard to the implementation of programs for the use of an AAC system.
