Approximants

J (and hiatus)

Wood (1987: 132) notes the presence of /h/-insertion (hiatus or glide replacement by /h/), which apparently occurs in all Afrikaans-influenced varieties of English and which he claims occurs across the social scale. The favored context seems to be intervocalically after an unstressed syllable, e.g. piano [pi'ɦænɐu] – a typical realization in my data also. Other hiatus-fillers in my data included [ʔ] and [ʍ].
