plereme (n.)

A term used by some LINGUISTS to refer to the minimal UNITS of MEANING in COMPONENTIAL SEMANTIC analysis – what are often called ‘semantic FEATURES’ or ‘semantic COMPONENTS’. In GLOSSEMATICS, the term refers to the minimal unit of meaningful EXPRESSION.

In the study of writing systems, a plereme is a SIGN which denotes both MEANING and FORM; opposed to ceneme. Examples of pleremic symbols are Egyptian hieroglyphs and Chinese characters.
