Too great stress cannot be put upon the statement that the time employed in doing a certain amount of work has nothing whatever to do with the amount of work done. When 1 lb. is raised 1 ft., exactly 1 foot pound of work is done, no matter whether the time taken in the raising is 1 second or 1 hour or 40 hours. The dealer who pays a lump sum for the unloading of a boatload of coal, pays for that alone, and not for the time that may be consumed by the use of an imperfect hoisting machine.
