Light sensitivity exacerbates Alzheimer symptoms
3:20:53 2023-08-01 1362

A study conducted by scientists from the University of Virginia and published in the journal Frontiers revealed that sensitivity to light can exacerbate symptoms of Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia, affecting around 50 million people worldwide. The hallmark of this disease is progressive memory loss, which can lead to patients forgetting loved ones, as well as feeling restless, aggressive, and aimlessly wandering. Symptoms often worsen in the evening and at night.

And in a new study of Alzheimer's disease in mice, scientists have found that altering natural light alters the behavior of the animals. At the same time, the diseased mice reacted differently from the healthy mice, as they adapted to changes in lighting faster.

Scientists believe this is due to increased sensitivity to light, which can cause dementia. Normally, the biological clock adjusts to changes slowly, as the body needs time to adjust. But in Alzheimer's disease, this change can happen very quickly.

At first, the researchers thought the cause might be inflammation in the brain, so they looked at brain immune cells called microglia, which have become promising targets in developing Alzheimer's treatments. But the effect on glial cells did not affect the mice's rate of adaptation.

Experiments have also shown that Alzheimer's disease may be accompanied by light sensitivity as a result of changes in the retina, and this discovery may form the basis of new ways to treat, monitor and prevent dementia and sleep disorders in patients with it.
