Guidance Recommendations for Parents of a Child with an Intellectual Disability

- The best way for parents to cope with the shock of learning about their child's condition is to turn to Allah, the Almighty, remember Him, and pray that He grants them patience in the face of their ordeal and helps them care for their child.

- Parents should know that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) urged us to care for the vulnerable, and that caring for a child with a disability is a responsibility entrusted to the parents.

- Parents should understand that they are not alone in their suffering and that there are dozens, hundreds, and even thousands of families with children in similar circumstances.

- It is advisable for parents to express their feelings and for each to understand how the other feels about the situation they are going through. They should encourage one another to take positive action and develop shared plans and a consistent approach to caring for their child with a disability.

- Talk to people you trust. Everyone has people in their lives with whom they feel comfortable and at ease when discussing their concerns and feelings. Parents can turn to these people for support in easing the painful emotions they experience.

- Seek information. Some parents seek a great deal of information, while others do not. What matters most is seeking accurate and reliable information.

- Maintain a positive outlook. A positive outlook is one of the valuable tools people can use to cope with life's problems.

- Look for suitable programs for your child. There are many programs that help people with disabilities through education, rehabilitation, parental guidance, medical treatment, physical development, and other forms of support.

- Avoid pity. Self-pity, experiencing pity from others, and feeling sorry for the child are all obstacles. What is needed is not pity but empathy and emotional support.

- Remember that the child is your child. The person you are concerned about is your child first and foremost. Although the child's development may differ from that of other children, this does not make your child any less valuable, human, important, or deserving of your love and care. Love your child and enjoy having them in your life. The child comes first, and the disability comes afterward. (Al-Shennawi, 1997)

These recommendations are therefore valuable and beneficial for families of children with intellectual disabilities, helping them overcome psychological stress and face the challenges they encounter in their lives with the assistance of a counselor who possesses effective professional and personal qualities that contribute to the success of the counseling relationship.

Finally, after this brief discussion of counseling for families of children with intellectual disabilities, there is no doubt that these families had dreamed of having a child who would grow up typically and fulfill their dreams and aspirations—things they themselves may not have been able to achieve in their own lives. They never expected to have a child who would be different from other children.

As a result, they go through several stages, including shock, difficulty accepting the child, rejection, avoidance of their responsibilities toward the child's care and well-being, and other problems they encounter because of their child's disability.

These problems may become more numerous and severe, to the point where parents are unable to confront or overcome them, causing psychological stress in their lives.

This is where the skilled counselor plays an important role. Through counseling skills and relationships with parents, the psychological knowledge they have acquired, their personal qualities, and the professional principles and ethics that guide their work, the counselor can identify the needs of the parents they work with as well as those of their children with disabilities.

The counselor can also make the best possible use of community resources in their counseling work to meet the needs of those seeking guidance.

The counselor must recognize that they are working with parents who are experiencing a crisis or hardship. Through counseling, they should provide support and help parents overcome their problems by developing their skills.
