discourse referent

A term sometimes used in SEMANTIC theory, especially in the study of ANAPHORA, for the representation of an individual at some level intervening between language and the external world. It is used primarily to deal with cases in which two or more NOUN PHRASES have identical real-world REFERENTS, but produce patterns of anaphora as though they differed in reference.
