Magnetostriction
Magnetostriction is measured in large single crystals by means of strain gauges glued to the crystal surface, which respond to the strain in a particular direction. For thin films on a substrate of known thickness and elastic constants, the magnetorestriction coefficient can be determined from the slight flexing of the substrate when the film is magnetized, detected by long optical lever. Optical interferometry is also used.
