A new study has shown that the habit of deep sleep that an individual does during his weekly vacation can increase gut bacteria linked to obesity, heart attacks and strokes, according to the Daily Mail.

Doctors explained during their studies that just an additional 90 minutes in bed is enough to disrupt some body functions, affecting a range of functions from the immune system to the digestive system.

And the ZOE Predict study by King's College London found that even a small change in the time we wake up can have an impact on our circadian rhythms.

The scientists assessed 934 thin, basically healthy people who slept at least seven hours each night during the weekend.

The doctors obtained a range of samples including blood, stool and gut microbiome samples and glucose measurements and compared them to those with regular and irregular sleep patterns.

Dr Kate Birmingham said: 'Sleep is a fundamental pillar of health, and this research is particularly timely given the growing interest in circadian rhythms and the gut microbiome. Even a 90-minute difference in the middle of your sleep period can encourage the kinds of germs that have unfavorable associations with your health.

The study concluded that sleeping in on the weekends, as opposed to the normal wake-up call during weekdays, was associated with poor diet quality, obesity, heart attack, stroke, diabetes and cardiovascular risk.

It was also found that those who took extra naps were more likely to drink sugary drinks and eat fewer fruits and nuts.
