Any parent of one child knows that it is really hard; Since you have to entertain the child, be a loyal friend to him, and be his playmate in addition to being his father; This is because most of the time there is no one else to play these roles.
However, when you have more than one child, you will find that they can play many roles for each other; this gives you enough time to do parenting (and maybe even time to yourself to sit back and read your newspaper). And when you do this, you do not give up part of your responsibilities, but the opposite is true.
It is better for your children to entertain each other than you entertain them all the time. Of course, this does not mean that you will never play with them, but if you do, it will not be as equal as you might expect; Of course, you can come up with more ideas than them, or you will even direct their ideas and impose your opinions. And if you do not do this and let them do as they like, then you will not teach them how to bargain and negotiate.
In the case of children playing with each other, equality certainly exists; Even if one of them is in control while the other is giving in to his opinions (the more children, the more intertwined the interactions between them) you have to leave it all up to them. You cannot change their personal characteristics, and you will probably find that when they grow up, the one who acquiesces and retreats will be the one with the best diplomatic personality and the most capable of participating in collective action. So, do not give in to the temptation to intervene and set things right - it is up to them, and they will settle it themselves, by quarrels and other means.
Some parents have a child who wants to play with his brother, while this brother wants to be alone. Of course you can have another child to solve that problem, but you have to leave it to them to solve it together, and they will come to some kind of compromise - the lonely child will become more sociable, while the social one will learn how to play Wesley amuses himself alone - which is a good thing, isn't it.
