In Rabīʿ II 9/July-August 630, the Prophet (s) assigned Ali b. Abī Ṭālib (a) with the responsibility of leading an expedition to the Ṭayyiʾ tribe. Upon demolishing the idolatrous temple of al-Fuls, and upon capturing ʿAdī b. Ḥātim’s sister and acquiring spoils, Ali (a) made his way back. During the journey, he distributed the spoils among his comrades, ensuring to set aside the appropriate khums (one-fifth portion). The Prophet (s) sent Ali (a) with a force of 150 men, none of whom were from the Anṣār, along with 100 swords and 50 horses, to dismantle the idol known as al-Fuls and its associated temple. Accompanied by his comrades, Ali (a) embarked on the mission while holding a black flag (Rāyatun sawdāʾ) and a white flag (liwāʾun abyaḍ). To maintain secrecy, Ali (a) and his companions traveled under the cover of night, employing reconnaissance missions to gather information. During one such mission, they encountered an adolescent boy who provided valuable intelligence. With the boy’s guidance, they launched a night raid that lasted until morning, resulting in the acquisition of numerous spoils. Subsequently, Ali (a) liberated those captives who had embraced Islam, dismantled the idolatrous temple of al-Fuls, and discovered spoils within its treasury.
While being held captive in Medina, ʿAdī b. Ḥātim’s sister had multiple conversations with the Prophet (s) to negotiate her release. She recounted to the Prophet (s) the passing of her father and the flight of her sole provider, her brother ʿAdī. Over the course of three consecutive days, she implored the Prophet (s) to grant her release with utmost kindness. On the fourth day, upon the recommendation of Ali (a), she approached the Prophet (s) once more. Finally, the Prophet (s) granted her release and bestowed generous gifts upon her. Upon receiving this news, ʿAdī returned and embraced Islam.
