The shortage of fresh water in the world will increase over time
Victor Danilov-Danilian, an expert at the Russian Academy of Sciences and scientific director of the Institute of Water Problems, announced that the shortage of fresh water in the world will increase over time for reasons known for a long time.
In an interview with the "Izvestia" newspaper, the scientist points out that there is nothing new in the recent "discovery" published by an international team of scientists regarding the lack of water volume in some lakes.
He says, "This study does not create the impression that it is serious. Everything is simplified, and the statistical calculations do not inspire confidence. There is nothing new in it. Because talk about the global water crisis has been going on for the past 35 years. The bottom line is that the amount of economically available water resources is decreasing."
According to him, one of the most important reasons for this phenomenon is the increase in the amount of greenhouse gases: evaporation from the surface of lakes increases, which leads to an increase in the amount of water vapor in the atmosphere, in exchange for a decrease in water on Earth.
Secondly, many sources of fresh water are polluted, so that the cost of purifying them is much higher than the cost of desalinating sea water. Thirdly, improper use of groundwater leads to the drying up of the rivers that feed from them. Fourthly, extraction operations in mines have caused the loss of many Water sources. If the rivers dry up, the amount of water in the lakes they flow into will decrease. There are many other reasons."
The scientist points out that water consumption in the world is increasing gradually, as a result of increased consumption in developing countries, as water is necessary for the agricultural sector and various industrial sectors.
