We all know exercise is important, but why? With so much information out there, finding out what works for you can sometimes be tricky.

Reasons to work out

Different people have different motivations. It could be vanity, important for your job, or maybe a health scare has kicked you off the couch. Whatever the motivation, it's definitely going to improve your life in more ways than one.

  • Your Body: Name one sportsman who looks bad in shorts - darts players don't count. It may not make you David Beckham. But your skin, heart and belly will be eternally grateful.
  • Your Mind: Regular exercisers are less stressed, and life doesn't get them down as often, or as easily. They sleep better, and they run smoothly.
  • Your Food: 1 hour run = around 500kCals burned = two bags of Revels. Adds up, really.

Put in the groundwork now - exercising when you're young makes the heart and bones healthy for the future.

What to do

  • Be active in your everyday life. Walk and climb stairs. Wave the bus and the lift goodbye. Move wherever and whenever you can - walk to school, play footie at break time, do the Harlem Shake with your mates!
  • Be fit. You need to do a total of two-and-a-half hours a week, or five x 30 minute sessions, of moderate intensity to maintain a good level of fitness. This is where you breathe faster, get warm and feel your heart beating more quickly.
  • Be interested. Find something you like. If you think the treadmill's boring, don't get on it; you'll hate every seond. Be it swimming or tennis, zumba or rock climbing - if you enjoy it, go for it!
  • Be sure to mix it up. Go with a friend, try something new or even just make a new playlist. Nothing kills a workout like boredom!
  • Be careful. Start slowly, especially if you're using equipment. If you're completely unfit or suffer from a medical condition, consult your doctor before jumping in head first.

What not to do

Don't be afraid of getting started. That first step IS the most difficult, but once you get into a routine you'll start to feel more confident and the results will follow.

You may not have the perfect body now, but it doesn't mean you can't get it with a bit of effort! Nobody got ripped in a day, but your body and mind will appreciate the efforts you make. It takes about six to eight weeks to see noticeable results.
