Give yourself time to adjust to change
12:9:30 2025-02-16 1506

Don’t expect to feel comfortable immediately after a move or when you’re in a new situation. Instead, give yourself time to adjust. If you know how to make yourself comfortable in new circumstances, the changes you make in the future will be easier for you.

Jill is a seasoned and respected teacher who has taught eighth grade for over twenty years. Teachers have a unique job in that they start fresh every year and are surrounded by new faces. Jill was an experienced teacher who loved teaching, but every year she faced the same thing the night before the first day of school: pacing back and forth, anxious and wondering, and rarely sleeping that night.

Jill admits that human instinct is to be anxious and uncomfortable with change, leaving her feeling anxious when faced with twenty-five new faces on her first day. However, she quickly finds comfort in the regularities that remain constant and is motivated by the idea that she is embarking on a new adventure unlike any she has ever done before.

In a study of newlyweds, those who admitted to difficulties in their new situation were 1.5 times more comfortable with each other and with the marriage than those who tried to hide their difficulty in dealing with the change.
